During the colonial period the British, French, Portuguese and to a small extent Dutch administrators brought their furnishings to India. Wealthy Indians and Europeans had local craftsmen make copies of these European pieces in Teak, Rosewood, Satinwood and other indigenous hardwoods available at that time.
After the Colonial rule ended most of these pieces were stored or fell into misuse, many were painted. The sturdy nature of the craftsmanship and woods have preserved them.
